Run the Mont-Blanc-Trailtour – without moving!

Hej Outdoorfans! Do you want to run the Mont-Blanc-Race whenever you want? Virtually that’s possible now.

Polartec, the leading manufacturer of performance fabrics, has partnered with The North Face®, to launch the The North Face® Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc® Giveaway, a Facebook application based on the infamous 166km trail running race around Mont Blanc, starting on August 22, 2011.

The application leads users on a virtual trail run through five of the most famous stops on the race. Starting in Chamonix, France, the app highlights some of the most picturesque and challenging sections of the route, asking virtual runners race-related quiz questions on the way to the finish.

Wonder how this looks like? To run the virtual race, visit the Polartec  or The North Face® - Facebook pages and click on Trail Giveaway. To learn more about the race itself, head to www.ultratrailmb.com.

We hope you have fun testing the trail tour and sharing your experience!

Morgedal – the cradle of skiing

In the Norwegian county Telemark lies the small village Morgedal – the birthplace of ski sport as we know it today. Sondre Norheim revolutionized skiing right here by inventing the first carving skis.

Sondre – a passionate skier since his childhood – was improving his skiing skills continually and reached some day the limits of his skies. Thus, he started developing his skies by making them shorter and curved. Additionally, he attached bindings with straps around the heels to maneuver better between trees and cliffs at high speed with skies attached tighter to the feet. The carving ski was born.

The word about these exceptional skiing skills reached even the capital of Norway, Christiania (now Oslo), and Sondre was invited to the very first national skiing competition in 1868. He won the contest with brilliance and overwhelmed the capital’s audience as well as the newspapers with his outstanding performance. Furthermore, the Christiania (parallel turn) swing and the Telemark turn had been shown here for the first time by Sondre Norheim.

Check out how Telemarking looked like in the late 1860′s in Morgedal:

Today, Morgedal is still a quite valley with only 250 inhabitants and the world’s first slalom slope’s – still in their original condition. It is also called “Mecca”, because skiing originated here and every ski enthusiast has to pilgrim there at least once. Every year the Morgedal Winter Games invite skiers to make their ski pilgrimage, to learn and celebrate the heritage of Telemark Skiing. This year, it will take place next weekend, from the 3rd till 6th March.

Program of Morgedal Winter Games 2011:

  • March 3rd – guided tour and orientation to Morgedal.  Dinner at the Museum with a late night movie screening
  • March 4th – ski making workshop.  Morgedal has a long tradition of ski makers including Terje Haugen and Tarjei Gjelstad.  Test these skis on the slopes of Kliev afterwards.  Later, a scooter will transport you and your telemark gear to the backcountry basecamp.  Sondre style roof jumping included.  Afterwards, the official opening at Skare Farm will be held (home of Svein Sollid – first man to jump over 100 feet on skis and winner of the inaugural Holmenkollen Championship)
  • March 5th – Norwegian Cup – race is open for all.  Other activities include dog sledding, Norheim Telecross, Torch lit tour of Sondre Norheim’s birthplace, and finally the Morgedal Home Coming Party
  • March 6th – The Morgedal Classic – Kleiv, prize giving and games closing.  Afterwards will be the skiers lunch and open admission to the Norwegian Ski museum

Remember: This is not a ski resort with flashy chairlifts, ritzy bars or designer ski wear. This is a festival where you can experience the very roots of skiing.
